I am a big fan of super durable sandals. Here in Southern California, where everyone wears some form of sandal or another, many people probably feel the same way.   They want flip flops that will last, not some cheap ones that will fall apart in a month.  We wear them everywhere, not just to the beach.  You'll see people wearing flip flops at the movies, at the mall, or at school.  With the recent trend of walking more and driving less, footwear is more important than ever. After looking through photographs of surfers in the 1960s, we started to dig into the history of many surf companies. Rainbow flip flops originated in 1974 when Jay Longley started making them in his garage in Laguna Beach, California. Jay Longley started out making about 15 pairs of Rainbow Sandals per day out of leather and rubber in Laguna Beach.

His Rainbow flip flop company eventually moved to San Clemente, California and started to make over a thousand pairs of flip flops per day. Since 2002, Rainbow flip flopshave been manufactured in China.

Some say that sandals and flip-flops actually originate in countries like Egypt, China, New Zealand, and other countries in the Far East.  Looking closely at ancient hieroglyphics, you can see certain Egyptian characters wearing sandal-type of footwear.  During the ancient days, people wore sandals with no backs, or flip-flops.  We call them flip-flops because they make a flapping sound when you walk with them on your feet.  This is because they have no ankle support to keep them strapped to your feet.

It is often said that the New Zealand expression "jandals" for rubber sandals and the word "thongs" come from the expression "Japanese sandals."  This is because the shape of jandals are close to Japanese zori, which are a rubber sole that clings to the foot using two cloth thong, extending from both sides of the foot, to the gap between the big and second toes.  This footwear structure used to be the standard in Japan.

The Growth of Rainbows

Fast forward to modern times, the owner and founder of the Rainbow Sandals, Sparky, said that didn't even know how to make a single sandal when first starting out. He needed some help from his friends, and lots of experimentation, to come up with the first prototype of Rainbow flip flops.

The Rainbow Flip Flops Guarantee:

The Rainbow Flip Flop guarantee states that Rainbow Sandals will repair your flip flops if they are damaged or defective due to manufacturing defects. For instance, if your the strap on your flip flops are pulling out, they will repair it or replace it. If the layers on your Rainbow slippers are being delaminated or the stitching is coming undone on the Box-X stitch or leather strap, they will repair or replace your Rainbow flipflops. See the photo below for a good description of what they will replace. Keep in mind that the Rainbow Flip Flops guarantee doesn't apply at the store where you bought them. If you need a replacement, send your Rainbow filp flops to the factory. After they receive your sandles, the company states they will return them to you within 15 days.

What the guarantee doesn't cover:

The company "will NOT repair or replace your sandals if they become defective as a result of any circumstances not involved in the manufacturing". This means, that if the top or bottom sole is worn through to the soft colored insert, they won't repair anything about your Rainbow Sandals. If they are abused from skateboarding, chewed up by a dog, or have cuts, slashes, or burns, the guarantee is not valid. Also, if the flip flop rubber is cracked, or the sandals have endured excessive abuse, or torn straps, the guarantee will not be honored. If you send in a pair of sandals that not covered by the Rainbow flip flops guarantee, then you are responsible to pay for the return postage, which is usually 7 dollars.

Crocs seem to be all the rage in the past few years, but you can't deny the classic design of Rainbow flip flops.  I have to admit that I find Crocs comfortable.  My sister owns a pair and I wear them sometimes.  However, unlike Crocs, Rainbows are styled in a way that will stand the test of time.  The looks are obviously the major difference.  They are so simple and sleek that you can wear these with any outfit, even jeans, and still look great.  It's true that kids can look cute in anything, but adults look a little different when wearing Crocs.  =)
